TIGER SOCIETY MARTIAL ARTS
Shotokan Karate is a Japanese style of martial arts that originated in Okinawa. It is considered a hard
style form - meaning techniques are done with power and intensity. However, Shotokan offers very
flowing and efficient techniques. This style is good for students who feel they cannot do a lot of fancy
techniques or high kicks.
The meaning of Shotokan Karate Do: The founder Gichin Funakoshi’s pen name Shoto which means waving
pines (as in trees) and kan which is hall. Karate (or Kara-Te) which means empty hand and Do which means
way. So the full translation is “Shoto’s hall of the way of the empty hand”.
Tiger Society school of Shotokan Karate was started by Sensei Terry Bailor. His dream was to be able
to teach from a Christian perspective, and bring the word of God to those who were interested in the
martial arts.
